Elwood 'Woody' Combs

Woody Combs, who suffered a World War One gas attack disability, ran a tackle shop in Ennis for many years. Woody sold the business to Jerry Morgan in 1958. Jerry's brother Tom bought the store three years later. That store is still there, now known as the Tackle Shop, a downtown mainstreet Ennis institution. The Three River's Special (Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin) was Woody's best fly. I've been assured by guys who remember the fly it was and still is a real killer--particularly deadly for large brown trout in the deeper runs upstream and downstream of Varney Bridge on the Madison.
